Boneyard tonight at the Coyote 4-16-09

Boneyard, (the band from (sm)xell), rocks the patio at the Coyote bar and grill tonight in Carlsbad CA. Check out these ageless rock and roll wonders. Local legends these guys, and one hot (pregnant) chick, play classic rock hits from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and even 00’s.

The band typically plays the Coyote once a month on the outdoor patio. Self appointed band leader, lead singer, and proprietor of the Offshore Surf Shop, Scot Ammen recently reported, “This will probably be our last gig for a while as rythm guitar player Joe will require shoulder surgery and lead singer Kirsten is scheduled to have a baby”.

So if you get a chance stop by the Coyote between 6-10PM for a taste of some well played classic rock and roll.

Bubble Gum Board Wax - How it came to be!

Back in the summer of 1984 in a sun-bathed kitchen in Leucadia, California, Britt Galland, just two years out of San Dieguito High School, along with his brother Grant, invented Bubble Gum Surf Wax.

“Even today, no matter who smells Bubble Gum Surf Wax, is brought back to an earlier place in time, its like being a kid in the summertime again, running around with a pocket full of Bazooka bubble gum,” explains Britt Galland, the mad scientist of surf wax. “Bubble Gum’s whole idea — its color, smell, look and feel — was a huge, immediate success.”

We threw a little product out there into the surf industry, stood back and watched what happened,” says Galland. “People flipped out over it. . . . .. . and ever since this brand of wax has been keeping the feet of surfers the world over glued to their boards.

After withstanding the test of time, the Galland brothers are moving ahead with continued innovation to keep Bubble Gum Surf Wax on the top shelf. “This is our passion play,” says Britt, we surf everyday all over the world with our friends and family. There is nothing we would rather be doing..

Offshore Submission: (sounds like I should be wearing leather…)

So school’s started again, many of us have gone back to work after our summer vacations, we’re gearing up for autumn but Carlsbad is still rolling. The water is warm with a southwest swell coming in, the days are bright and still last a while.

The Boost Mobile Pro Trestles surf contest is running from September 8 (it was postponed Sunday), just 20 minutes away at Lower Trestles in San Clemente. With the swell and the competitors, it’s definitely worth watching. Prepare for a trek, parking is tricky – but the break is definitely worth the hike. Option One: Take the 5 to Cristianitos and park in the public lot by Carl’s Jr. or on the street and walk down the trail. Option Two: Get off the 5 at Basilone and park at San Onofre State Beach like you’re going to Old Man’s and head north – no hills, but it’s a distance getting there. However you play it, it’s going to rock.

It’s easy to slip back into routine once Labor Day’s gone, but this is our extended summer. We still have a lot to do before we pull on the 20-year-old Uggs and hibernate. For locals and visitors alike, this is the best time of year for southern California.

In the course of just a week, the battle for parking has abated a bit and we can get on the beach that feeds our souls. The Village continues to come into its own and is ours to enjoy – The restaurants are packed with friends enjoying the diverse menus the city has to offer, live music and a Scene that lacks Scene. Boutiques, galleries, museums and specialty shops thrive and beckon. There is a growing theatrical presence with the historic Carlsbad Village Theater and the New Village Arts Theater (in the old Bauer Lumber building). In and around our little (but not as little as it used to be) city, there is a wealth of things to do. Get out and enjoy!
